What were you doing at 8pm? I am usually brushing the children’s teeth, saying goodnight to Mum and putting them to bed.
Yesterday, though, I noticed the increased flow in the Ostravice. I left the bedtime routine, picked up Marthy Tvardek and headed to U Žida. Our mission was clear: rescue the thermometer, which had stopped transmitting.
When we arrived, the problem was obvious: the thermometer was completely underwater. We left the rescue until today, since diving down with a cordless screwdriver would achieve nothing. I sent a few friends the news of its demise, and condolences arrived immediately.
Imagine the surprise this morning: it was alive and reporting the temperature again!
I doubt NASA staff felt greater joy when a Mars rover thought dead made contact again after years of silence.
Hooray — we are delighted!
